Most hosting sold in Bangladesh is chosen for speed: a BDIX-connected server close to the people visiting the site. Offshore hosting is chosen for a different reason entirely — the legal setting the server sits in. Those two goals pull in opposite directions, and it is worth knowing how far apart they are before you choose.
The speed cost is real, but smaller than it sounds
A request from Dhaka to a server overseas travels much further than one to a server on BDIX, and each round trip goes from a few milliseconds to well over a hundred. One round trip is barely noticeable. A page that needs dozens of them before it finishes loading is where visitors start to feel it.
Three things win most of it back:
- Caching. A page served from cache needs one trip instead of many. On WordPress, a proper page cache matters more on an offshore server than anywhere else.
- Fewer requests. Combine scripts, lazy-load images, and remove the tracking tags nobody looks at.
- Lighter pages. Text and compressed images cross long distances well. Autoplaying video and oversized sliders do not.
A CDN can put copies of your static files close to visitors too, but read its abuse policy first. Some forward copyright complaints straight to your host and tell the complainant who that host is.
Who should stay on BDIX
A local shop, a school, a restaurant, a company brochure site, a WooCommerce store selling to customers in Bangladesh. None of these receive takedown notices, and all of them benefit from a fast local server. Offshore gives them nothing in return for the slower load. If that is you, BDIX hosting is the better fit.
Who offshore suits
Sites whose content is lawful but regularly reported: reviews that name brands, criticism and commentary, forums, and publications covering companies that send lawyers' letters. Also sites with a mostly international audience, for whom a server in Bangladesh was never the closer option anyway.
Sort these out before you move
- Your domain. A .com.bd domain falls under BTCL's rules, and a registrar anywhere will act on a court order. Moving your hosting offshore does not move your domain with it.
- Backups you control. Keep a recent copy off the server. That is good advice everywhere, and more so when the server is far away.
- Payments. Gateways and payment processors have their own acceptable use rules and act on complaints quickly. Check them before you build income on top.
- The rules that still apply. Malware, phishing, spam and illegal content are removed on offshore hosting too. Read the acceptable use policy before you upload anything.
Our BDIX hosting and our DMCA ignored offshore hosting are billed from the same account. Not sure which one your site needs? Tell us what it does and we will say.
