Shared, reseller or VPS: how to tell which one you have outgrown

"My site is slow, should I get a VPS?" is one of the most common questions we get, and the answer is usually no. A VPS is not a faster shared plan — it is the same hardware with a different boundary drawn around it, and a badly optimised site will be just as slow on it, only now you are also the sysadmin.

Here is what genuinely signals each step.

Stay on shared hosting if…

Your bottleneck is assets. Big images, no caching, too many plugins — all fixable where you are, and covered in our WordPress speed guide.

Shared hosting handles far more traffic than people assume when pages are cached. A cached page is a file being served; the server barely notices. Tens of thousands of visits a month is unremarkable.

Move to reseller hosting when…

You are managing sites for other people. Not because you need more resources — because you need separation. Each client gets their own cPanel, their own logins, their own quota, and one client's mistake stops being everyone's problem.

The trigger is administrative, not technical. If you are hosting five clients in five subfolders of one account, you already needed this.

Move to a VPS when…

One of these is true:

Your pages cannot be cached. A store where every visitor sees their own cart, or a membership site where everyone is logged in. Cached pages barely touch PHP; uncachable ones hit it on every single request.

You need software the shared server does not run. Node, Redis, a specific PHP extension, a queue worker, a cron running every minute. Shared hosting is deliberately restrictive.

You are genuinely hitting resource limits. Not "the site feels slow" — actual CPU or entry-process limits in your cPanel resource usage graphs, repeatedly, at normal traffic.

The honest warning

A VPS is unmanaged unless you pay for management. Updates, firewall, backups, and the 3 am reboot when something wedges are yours. Plenty of people move to a VPS for speed, get less speed and more work, and quietly move back.

If you are not sure which of these describes you, ask before upgrading. It takes us two minutes to look at your resource usage and tell you honestly — and quite often the answer is that a caching plugin and some resized images will do more than doubling your plan.
