Taking payments on a Bangladeshi WooCommerce store: bKash, Nagad and SSLCommerz

Bangladesh is an unusual ecommerce market. Mobile money is more advanced here than in most of the world, and cash on delivery is still the default. Any store that only takes cards is leaving most of the country out.

The two routes

Direct integration means signing up with bKash and Nagad separately, each with its own merchant account, its own approval process, and its own WooCommerce plugin.

An aggregator — SSLCommerz being the largest here — is one integration and one merchant account that gives you bKash, Nagad, Rocket, cards and internet banking behind a single checkout.

For most stores the aggregator wins, and not because it is technically better. It is one application, one reconciliation, and one place to chase when a payment does not arrive. Running three direct integrations means three of everything.

Direct integration becomes worth it at volume, where the per-transaction saving outgrows the admin, or when you want bKash's own branded checkout because customers recognise and trust it.

What this needs from your hosting

Less than people expect, but it is not nothing:

A valid SSL certificate. Non-negotiable — gateways will not process on an insecure checkout, and customers notice.

Reliable outbound requests. Your server talks to the gateway API mid-checkout. If outbound connections are blocked or slow, payments fail at the worst possible moment.

A reachable callback URL. The gateway calls back to confirm payment. Aggressive caching or firewall rules that block unfamiliar POST requests will break confirmations while the customer's money has already left.

Uncachable pages. Cart and checkout must never be cached. Every caching plugin knows this, but a misconfigured one showing a stale cart is a genuinely awful bug to debug.

Cash on delivery

You will still need it. COD remains how a large share of Bangladeshi customers buy, particularly outside the big cities and particularly for first purchases from an unfamiliar shop.

It is not free, though. COD carries return rates that online payment does not, because there is no commitment until the courier arrives. Many stores offer both and nudge toward prepayment with a small discount — enough to shift the customers who were willing anyway.

Before you launch

Test with real money. Put through a small live order on each method, then refund it. Sandbox environments pass for things that fail in production, and the first person to find out should not be a customer.

A WooCommerce store needs uncachable checkout pages and reliable outbound API calls — both fine on our LiteSpeed plans. If the store is busy, ask us before you buy; sometimes the honest answer is a VPS.
